Review The Hunt for Ned Kellyby Sophie Masson, published by in the My Australian Story SeriesISBN 978 1 74169 564 9 reviewed by Hazel EdwardsI ll declare my bias Sophie Masson is an Australian writer whose international view I admire, since she manages to operate enthusiastically in several cultures and languages simultaneously And currently I m especially interested in the ways history can be presented in an enticing fashion for junior readers Ned Kelly was an apt figure about whom much is know [...]
A creditable representation of the realistic and mythic aspects of the story of the Kelly gang in rural Victoria in the late 1870 s I was reminded of reading about this story in secondary school to have a class debate as if conducting Ned s trial The same tensions came out in the classroom as in the community of that time But having attended school with many from a migrant background, I was the only student who seemed at all concerned about justice and what the true story may have been All the o [...]
I liked this book because it is an exciting and thrilling adventure, but also because it tells some history about a extremely famous Australian villain and hero This guy was famous for being the best bush ranger in Australia The history that is told about in this book is a few interesting events in the life of Edward Ned Kelly Most of these events connect to the adventure of the main characters who are fictional, although their life is fictional it is very interesting and sound reasonably real.T [...]
I like the even handedness of Masson s story and the way she has weaved a photo and news articles into the story to give it authenticity Her characters of Jamie and Ellen are plausible and their experiences at Beechworth and unwittingly with the Kelly gang quite believable It is easy to read and is in diary form, with the narrator being 13 year old Jamie but this also adds to its value Similarly many of the descriptions of the time and the people are rich and vivid I look forward to Ned Kelly s [...]
I enjoyed this book without being excited I enjoyed telling of the Ned Kelly story without focusing on Ned and the gang sirectly The development on the two main characters was limited without impacting on the appeal on the story The balance provided by looking at individuals on either side of the hunt was good to see A thoroughly enjoyable read.
