When the woman with whom Richard Jury is engaged in a passionate affair is found dead of a barbiturate overdose in her flat, it seems that Jury s famously bad luck with women has reached its nadir Since the death is considered suspicious, Scotland Yard investigates, and since, because of his relationship with her, Jury is considered a possible suspect, he is suspended from the force Unable to participate himself, he deploys his friend Melrose Plant to go to the woman s family home in the Lake Di [...]

I liked it but I thought the woman they killed off was kind of a dopey character Fortunately, she has a really interesting son who carries the day in this novel.

I always seem to pick the wrong book to try out a series the writing style was good and the reading style, since this was an audio book , but I kept getting characters confused Possibly this story just didn t lend itself to audio book presentation, because it s third person with various changing points of view, but I think I d have had problems reading this story in print as well. The plot seemed very contrived Even though I d never read the book before, I got the impression that the main series [...]

No 11 in the Richard Jury series return return Jury, in Camden Passage with Carole anne Palutski, his beautiful if maddening upstairs neighbor or less loafing around while Carole anne shops for antique costume jewelry and other items, meets as if by accident an attractive and intriguing widow, Jane Holdsworth, also shopping in the open air market They go off together for a drink at a pub and then, almost as an afterthought, find themselves in Jury s flat, where they become lovers Within two wee [...]

I read this book before, twenty some years ago when it first came out, but I didn t remember any of the plot In the end, I really liked this book But at the start, I was a little put off by it It seemed like a recycled storyline Richard Jury meets a girl, develops an emotional attachment to her and shortly thereafter she ends up dead The first third of the book I found wanting The story seemed to develop a little slowly and the plot seemed to similar to Jerusalem Inn and while I liked the new ch [...]

I love the Richard Jury books and have read the entire series This particular one is a favorite simply because I love the characters Ms Grimes has drawn Melrose Plant is priceless I enjoy his dry wit and his eschewing the trappings of title and wealth He is in the enviable position of being able to do whatever he wants with his life and chooses to help Richard Jury on his cases Richard Jury is a melancholy person and a good contrast for Plant He s smart, but human, and despite his faults is love [...]

How does Martha Grimes manage to publish so many books that rely on the same set piece scenes and obsessions who cares whether Vivian gets married, how many fairy cakes Agatha eats or drinks are consumed at the local pub, what sign Carol Anne is, whether the old woman downstairs answers the door I feel like she must re open the same file each time she starts a book to change the color of the weird omniscient cat and the name of the peculiar orphan girl really, it s remarkable Even remarkable is [...]

The formula has been set All characters are in place, including two precocious children Agatha was otherwise engaged so we didn t see her Melrose is sent off to be a mole Richard is in London hanging loose until the end I did a little skipping through the lessons on the Lake District and its poets authors, as well as the lesson on watercolor techniques However, the mystery and the characters are good Keeps me fully engaged in this series Recommending.

Richard Jury deeply in love Adding a poignant touch to the usual team of Melrose Plant, Marshall Trueblood, and a lovely walk on by Vivian Rivington, Jury s emotional whirlwind leading to multiple murders to solve is what we come to Martha Grimes for And she delivers, as always

    Yael

    I really liked the end

I always enjoy reading about detective inspector Richard Jury and his friend Melrose Plant There is not that much Jury but I still enjoyed it

This is the second Superintendent Jury novel I ve read and number 11 in the series The first one I read was the 1st of the series, The Man With The Load Of Mischief. While I enjoyed the first Richard Jury book, I thought it was just a so so mystery that was fairly forgettable Because I am a huge British mystery fan, I usually always give these writers at least a couple of chances I had in my possession The Old Contemptibles , so I read it While The Old Contemptibles is number 11 in the series and [...]

Almost all the books I have marked as UNFINISHED were left after I had finished at least 50%, and I was done with the debate regarding whether or not to continue with it The same problem happened with this book Only with this one, I decided to finish , and I can t say that it was a GOOD decision to continue Rather it was an OKAY ish sort of decision.Richard Jury after a short term romance with a lady decides to marry her only to find dead and him, being suspended from the force and being suspect [...]

The beauty about Martha Grimes book are that they are so engaging Her characters are well thought out, extremely ridiculous and funny, and they stay with you long after you finish reading And I m not talking about the main characters either, which are very engaging in their own rights Jury was not really the central character for this story The lady he was seeing, and considering for marriage after two weeks yeah that was a bit ridiculous ends up dead Is it suicide Or murder But as he is a suspe [...]

Finished reading this yesterday First off, I love Grimes style of writing It s effortless, often elegant, crisp and clean Not overdone with description, but just enough to really set the scene And the scene in this book is the lakes district of England However, I had a few problems with this bookSo many characters With often similar or ordinary names I had to re read portions to remember who Anne was or Genevieve I bet the writer had a hard time keeping track of them all There were the regulars, [...]

Okay, I think it s time for a break from this series I was totally into the books, but the last two have been too much to take First of all, how many precocious 11 12 year old girls are there in these remote villages Seems like we are meeting or less the same characters in the last few books Each of these girls has a cat and or special connection with the animals etc etc and it s just become too much to take Jury was hardly featured in this one and I still can t figure out a why he was a suspec [...]

    Debbie

ok anyone reading my reviews know that I like this character Richard Jury but this one is pretty bad and it hurts to write this First of all there is only a bit of Jury in the beginning and at the end we need Plant and Jury TOGETHER The opening is funny with Trueblood and Plant trying to delay Viv s wedding to the Count but then it goes downhill from there The mystery itself makes no sense Jury wants to buy a ring for someone he s been seeing for just a few weeks completely out of character This [...]

Years ago in college my early days in Seattle I began reading Martha Grimes s Jury Plant mystery series I started because I liked the idea that each book was named after an English pub I kept reading because of the friendship of Supt Richard Jury Melrose Plant I stopped reading the series in the middle of this book The Old Contemptables I remember thinking at the time that the tone had changed Jury s character was changing After re reading the whole series up to now, and then reading all of The [...]

The could be my favorite so far and I ve read many subsequent ones out of order It took a while to get past some preliminaries but then things really cranked up I especially liked the characters beyond the regular cast Very satisfying.

    Jennifer

Due to my library not having all the books, I am reading them out of order That being said, it doesn t seem like I ve missed much For once, this one finally had a satisfactory ending The beginning Totally unbelievable Grimes doesn t create very likable characters that she makes you wish would end up in stories My other complaint, however, is that the reasoning behind the killings in this story fell totally flat and non believable I continue to read these stories, but I have yet to find one that [...]

As a mystery, this was fine I just objected to the 12 year old cook Richard Jury gets a girlfriend This is almost always a mistake But we won t mourn for her departure much because they are obviously unsuited Jury must be desperate Little things are annoying him right off the bat, but he must let them go for the sake of the leg over Melrose Plant s querulous assistance in the investigation is refreshing, and the aristocratic kleptomaniac was a nice touch, but the 12 year old spare me, please.

    Ann Aldrich

A rather perverted story line Jury falls madly in love, to the point of buying an engagement ring The woman is found dead, apparently a suicide, but perhaps murdered Turns out she was conning him into solving two murders committed by a previous lover Pretty cold blooded As usual, there are children among the major characters and introspection and tangents than plot As a writer, Grimes seems motivated primarily by indulging her mastery of all things English It s remarkable, but it does get old.

    Writerlibrarian

Lots of great ideas in this tale of deceit and family love Both children are strong and not too perfect characters Jury is a passive character in this one Wiggins is still my favourite secondary character No contest I liked how kinda low key everything was Lady Cray was a wonderful, wonderful older woman character But it felt like Grimes lost steam 3 4 through the story and decided to wrap things up in a hurry which leaves the reader kinda frustrated I know I was Still a solid installment in th [...]

It was a really good mystery, and took me quite a while to untangle it.When it started in Venice with Melrose and Marshall, I worried it was going to be a lot silliness with them trying to stop Vivian from getting married.Instead, it turned into a really good story with Jury being suspected of possibly killing his girlfriend, a houseful of rich people with lots of motives to kill several people, and a delightfully insane group of wealthy aged people fencing and flinging pies at each other And t [...]

Bk 11 takes us toThe Lake Disrtict, back and forth across Wryenose Ass, to Adam Holdsworth, 89, staying at Castle How, rather than his own home, I habituated by his detestable family Jury becomes deeply involved with the mother of Gambling, 16year old Alex, who loves his mother and his great Grandfather Adam Millie, the young daughter and master chef of The Holdsworth s dead cook, is sure her mother was murdered, as is Alex Two murder suicides and two further deaths, what an unlucky family, or i [...]

11 in the Detective Superintendent Richard Jury of New Scotland Yard mystery series Jury becomes romantically involved with a woman who suddenly dies either murdered or suicide with Jury as a potential suspect Investing what happened brings Jury into contact with her country side wealthy relatives via marriage There have been 4 deaths over the past 4 years involving family members and an employee each somewhat suspicious Interesting mystery with interesting characters as family members.

This book is about a superintendent named Richard Jury He meets a strange woman named Jane Holdsworth, Richard is drawn into her and then he becomes a suspect in a murder investigation Richard is unable to leave London and later in the book he sends one of his friends to the Holdsworth house in the lake district to open the Holdsworth locked box of secrets The book was ok, I liked how it has an adventurous and mysterious setting in the book.

    Bill

A very entertaining mystery I ve enjoyed every Inspector Jury mystery I ve read and this was no exception The focus at the beginning was on Jury s friend Melrose Plant who goes to the Lake District to help Jury with an investigation He is a likable, interesting character and a very good investigator The story was interesting, flowed very nicely and I liked all the main characters, especilly Adam and Lady Cray Very entertaining and enjoyable.
